Product Description

Epiphan's new VGA2USB HR Frame grabber has 32MB RAM on board, FPGA and the most advanced Philips VGA ADC, which allows it to acquire frames with the resolution of up to 1600 x 1200 pixels in a 24-bit palette.

Because FPGA and 32MB RAM lossless compression is performed on board with normal utilization USB bus bandwidth, lossless 1600 x 1200 with 30 fps is achievable in the majority of applications.

VGA2USB HR

Today’s demanding business environment requires precision and security - two areas where Epiphan Systems’ VGA2USB HR shines.

The VGA2USB HR is able to perform lossless diagnostic-quality capture at resolutions of up to 1600 x 1200. And, with a maximum trasfer rate of 270 Megapixels per second, this frame grabber is able to achieve capture rates of 30 frames per second under most conditions.

No software or hardware modifications need to be performed on the source device, which makes the VGA2USB HR one of the most secure and reliable solutions for the capture of high resolution imagery.

As well, the VGA2USB HR is portable and small enough to fit into a shirt pocket, making it easy to transport between different locations and integrate into existing systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO work with USB 1.0 or USB 1.1?

2. How can I verify whether my system has USB 2.0?

3. How many frames per second can VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO capture?

4. Does VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO reduce the resolution of the images it captures in order to transfer it over the USB bus?

5. Can VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO work on Windows NT, Windows 3.x/95/98/SE/ME?

6. The video mode that I am using is not listed in the list of supported modes for VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO. Can VGA2USB capture it?

7. What Linux kernel does VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO support? Is the driver's code open source?

8. Can VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO save captured signals as a movie?

9. Which AVI codec works best with VGA2USB?

10. Images grabbed from some sources appear to be slightly shifted right or left. How this can be fixed?

11. Can I connect two or more VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO to one computer and capture signals simultaneously? What is the resulting rate of capture for each VGA2USB?

12. With what software can I interpret the digital signal coming out of the USB port of the VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO device?

13. Does the frame compression on VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO hamper the quality of the output?

14. Is VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO software compatible with MAC OS?

1. Will VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO work with USB 1.0 or USB 1.1?

VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO are compatible with USB 2.0 as well as USB 1.1. However, since VGA2USB transfers substantial amounts of data for each captured frame, performance will be greatly hampered with a USB 1.1 bus. USB 2.0 buses have a much higher transfer rate (480Mb/s), allowing VGA2USB to acquire and transfer several frames per second.

2. How can I verify whether my system has USB 2.0?

Please use this procedure to verify that your system has USB 2.0.

3. How many frames per second can VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO capture?

It depends on the resolution of your screen, amount of changes on the screen, the screen refresh rate, your operating system and the speed of the computer that is acquiring the images. Results can be anywhere from 10 to 60 frames per second. Uncompressed frame transfer generally yields lower results than compressed frame transfer. Please consult the Technical Specifications for appropriate capture rates for each device.

4. Does VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO reduce the resolution of the images it captures in order to transfer it over the USB bus?

No. VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO captures and transfers every pixel of the original VGA frame in RGB format. VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO uses lossless compression to transfer the image over the USB bus (Refer to #13 for more info). In this respect, VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO provides better quality than a VGA-to-video converter paired with a Composite or S-Video grabber.

5. Can VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO work on Windows NT, Windows 3.x/95/98/SE/ME?

No. Unfortunately, some of those systems have very poor support or no support at all for the USB 2.0 bus.

6. The video mode that I am using is not listed in the list of supported modes for VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO. Can VGA2USB capture it?

Please contact us. We are always looking for ways to improve our system and may be willing to add support for this mode.

7. What Linux kernel does VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO support? Is the driver's code open source?

Although we provide drivers for the 2.6.x series kernel (i386 and x86_64 platforms), we do not provide the source code for the driver itself. VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO driver supports Epiphan's proprietary API (described in Linux SDK) as well as the Video4Linux API. Please contact us if you need a driver compiled for a specific kernel version or kernel setting.

8. Can VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO save captured signals as a movie?

Yes, the VGA2USB application has the ability to save captured signals as an AVI file. Refer to #12 for more info.

9. Which AVI codec works best with VGA2USB?

The choice of codec and codec settings depend on the requirements for the quality of the AVI. You may need to try several codecs with different settings to see which codec best fits your task.

10. Images grabbed from some sources appear to be slightly shifted right or left. How this can be fixed?

VGA2USB has an automatic algorithm that crops visible images from the VGA frame. The algorithm may make a mistake, however, and be off by a few pixels. Please use the procedure described in this image to correct cropping.

11. Can I connect two or more VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO devices to one computer and capture signals simultaneously? What is the resulting rate of capture for each VGA2USB?

Yes you can connect two or more VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO devices and capture multiple signals simultaneously. You will need to run the VGA2USB application for each VGA2USB device attached. You will, however, notice a difference in frame rate for each additional active VGA2USB. The higher the performance of your computer, the better the possible frame rate. Please note that you must start the VGA2USB application after connecting each VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO.

12. With what software can I interpret the digital signal coming out of the USB port of the VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO device?

The VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO frame grabber works by emulating a high resolution video camera for Windows. VGA2USB is a DirectShow compatible device, which means that virtually any video capture software designed for Windows is compatible with VGA2USB. For example, VirtualDUB can be used to record .avi files, Microsoft Media Encoder to record .wmv files, and RealProducer to record .rm files.

13. Does the frame compression on VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO hamper the quality of the output?

No. VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO devices use a highly efficient and advanced compression algorithm that does not in any way reduce the image quality of the output. Through the use of this algorithm, high transfer rates can be achieved without any losses.

14. Is VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO software compatible with MAC OS?

Yes. VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO is fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.x and up. All VGA2USB LR/HR/PRO devices also support the QuickTime API
